We are based at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science and Umeå Marine Sciences Centre, Umeå University, Sweden. Our research seeks to understand the fundamental processes underlying photosynthesis in the coastal marine environment, applying this knowledge to coastal conservation and sustainability grand challenges for rural and indigenous communities. Working across different habitats including coralline algal reefs, mangrove forests and coral reefs, we have a particular focus on photosynthetic strategies under extreme light environments. We strengthen the impact of our research through multidisciplinary collaborations with other scientists, stakeholders, policymakers and managers, as well as leading a strong public engagement program.
